Richland College  Fall 2015 Credit - Honors and Honors Option

Honors and Honors Option courses challenge talented students with expanded opportunities for intellectual and personal growth. Honors courses contain only honors students; classes are usually small and discussion-oriented. In Honors Option courses, both honors and nonhonors students attend the same class sections. Honors students in these classes work independently with the instructor on honors projects.

When you are awarded honors credit in a class, that class is annotated on your academic transcript.

Delivery: We are looking at a community based course, focusing on a'vanished' African American community, Little Egypt, that existed in the NE Dallas area, before it disappeared, in the 1960s. The idea, at this stage in our discussion, centers around doing archival research, cartography, and potentially some oral histories and/or genealogical research with descendants of those who lived there and moved away. Note: This section is an Honors course, open only to students who have been admitted to the Honors Academy. Apply at http://www.richlandcollege.edu/honors/apply.php. This is part of a two-course Honors Learning Community that meets TR from 11:00-1:50. Students will receive six credits.

Finding Little Egypt This learning community is an enhanced "Honors" version of the second half of the HIST 1302 survey course with additional emphasis on issues surrounding Reconstruction and the life of Black and White Dallasites from the Jim Crow period to the 1960s as reflected in the story of the one-vibrant settlement known as "Little Egypt". It shares a commonality of themes with Anthropology 2346, which examines personal interactions, community dynamics, and archeology. Like detectives, students will interview eyewitnesses and former inhabitants of the now-vanished community as a part of reconstructing its lost past. You will, like any professional historian or anthropologist, complete assignments that involve searching archives, making site visits, and sleuthing for project-related photos, memorabilia, documents and other artifacts related to interpreting the story of the Little Egypt community. Teaching methods outside of lectures will include field trips and assistance with conducting the oral histories and archival research. You will be enrolled in HIST 1302-81090 and ANTH 2346-81090 and will receive six credits. Note: This section is also an Honors course, open only to students who have been admitted to the Honors Academy. Apply at http://www.richlandcollege.edu/honors/apply.php
